The Ten Benefits of Music Education

Music education offers many benefits to a child’s education and personal growth.

When a child plays an instrument or sings, they are doing more than moving their fingers or using their voice. They are tapping into various skill sets. They use their senses of sight, hearing, and touch, and a variety of muscle groups.

Whether studied in school or in private lessons, music education offers numerous benefits. Here are ten of them:

1. Language skills: Recent studies reveal that musical training physically develops the part of the left side of the brain involved with processing language. Musical training can actually wire the brain’s circuits in specific ways. If your child is learning a second language, learning a musical instrument will improve how their brain understands human language.

2. Improved test scores: Students perform better on tests when they are involved in a high-quality music education program. A university study found that the quality of a music program is key. Students in elementary schools with superior music programs scored about 22 percent higher in English and 20 higher in math on standardized tests compared to schools with lower-quality music programs.

3. Self-esteem: Studying music builds a student’s confidence as they work towards mastering an instrument or singing a song. Music students learn how to express their opinions and they appreciate it when their interests are understood by others. This creates a sense of acceptance that is critical to their self-esteem.

4. Listening skills: Musical training develops a person’s ability to listen to themselves, to cues, and to other musicians. Musicians need to hear tempos, dynamics, tuning and harmonies. Music education helps develop the auditory part of the brain, which plays a critical role in our ability to perceive sounds. It is responsible for sound processing, such as determining where a sound originates and identifying what produces the sound.

5. Math skills: A music student learns fractions when they read quarter, half and whole notes. A music student who learns about rhythm learns how to count notes. They are using logic to count out the rhythms and bars, as they work through a piece of music. Many musical concepts have mathematical counterparts.”

We’ll share the rest of the benefits of musical training in next week’s blog. For now, please visit The BelindaBrady.com Arts Academy website. We offer a number of high-quality music programs that can help your child learn new skills and build their self esteem. Contact us today to discuss your options.

Express Yourself Using Music

Music is a great tool for expressing human feelings and emotions. A songwriter and singer shares their emotions with every song. Music expresses joy, disappointment, anger, love, anticipation, and a number of other emotions.

Consider these songs:

  • We Found Love by Rihanna
  • Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mars
  • I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston
  • Hello by Lionel Ritchie

All of us can relate to the emotions in these songs. Chances are songs remind you of different events in your life. At weddings, brides and grooms enjoy their first dance as husband and wife to “their song.”

Music comes in different forms and styles, from reggae to hip-hop to rock and pop. There’s acapella, solo acts and instrumental melodies. Regardless of the style or cultural background, music connects people in amazing ways. People use music to share stories, celebrate their culture, and connect with God.

Music is universal.

Music is also therapeutic. Consider the story of an elderly woman in a medical facility who was angry but could not speak. After three days of escaping her punches, the staff call a certified music therapist.

She played the song, “Bicycle Built for Two,” and the elderly woman joined in. She knew the words to all the verses.

That’s the power of music.

Our bodies are musical. We respond to music by humming, tapping our toes, or dancing to the beat. Some people even believe the movement of blood and fluids in our bodies has a musical rhythm.

Tap into your hidden musical talents and learn how to express yourself with a Vocal & Music Training course from the Belinda Brady Arts Academy.

The single has a flavour of “Reggae meets Pop” vibe and is currently released on all music platforms.

The timely release is in a season when the world needs a message of hope and love, and where nations seek ways to heal from the inherited challenges of 2020. Channel Your Music

Channelling your music on various digital platforms is a crucial part of music promotion. Almost gone are the days when distributors sought arduously to get records in stores for people to buy them through their promotions. Digital music distribution is the way to go and is essential to reach potential fans. Smart distribution gets your music to as many people as possible and it helps you to get paid for your music.

As an artist, your digital distribution goal should be to get your music on as many digital platforms as possible, such as Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Google Play, Pandora, Apple Music, SoundCloud, Xbox, MySpace, iHeartradio, and other digital platforms and music stores.

Channelling your music on these platforms will allow your music to get the clout and the digital revenue it deserves even more than live performances and radio shows. The idea is to reach your listeners by meeting them in their online hangouts and open the door of opportunity to the hotspots that will sell your music.

Another perk of channelling your music online is the smart algorithms that recommend and suggest tracks to people based on what they listen to. In the digital world, this is how people discover music. How amazing is this?

A lover of your genre of music begins listening on his or her favourite hangout spot and Wallah! A song begins to stream that he or she has never heard before but is the exact melody, tune and lyrics that they have been searching for.

When all is channelled and done, the idea is just to get your music out in the world so that your fans and music lovers across the globe can discover your song or your album and begin streaming and networking your music that will inevitably promote sales.

Sign up with Belinda Brady’s course on Music and Digital Marketing Coaching and learn how to get your music on these digital platforms and out into the world.

Write Your Song!

Have you ever heard a melody floating in your head? You feel it could be a hook to your next hit song, but you are probably unsure of how to reproduce it. You have come to the right place. The melody in your head is the beginning of your story and is complimented by words that marry the music that is birthed within you.

As soon as you think of your ideas, record them whether in your notebook in your phone or on a software. This way you can always come back to the song to add, edit and improve on your work. As you go along, the rhythm becomes the engine of your music and guides you to a structure that cultivates patterns of beats needed to make notes and pitches in the melody. This is called the composition structure.

The melody is the driving force of your song, the lyrics are the storytelling part of the song, and is the link to making your listeners have an emotional connection. When they listen to the words they feel they can relate to what inspired you to write your song. This is why lyrics are so important because you are building on your story and taking your listeners on your journey.

A major contributor to songwriting is using an instrument to assist in your composition. Both the Piano and the guitar help with song patterns and chord progressions. Using any of these classic instruments will assist in honing your skills in songwriting since you are able to identify the chords and key signatures that match the melodies that you have created.

Most importantly, it is the steppingstone for finding creative ways to structure your songs. Sometimes the chorus of your song is what first pops in your head. Use that as a lead to compose your song. Start by finetuning your chorus and then use the words in your chorus to help to tell the rest of your story.

Keep the basic structure of your song in mind which will be Intro, Verse, Chorus, Verse 2, Chorus, Verse 3, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus and then Outro. The instrument you choose is an extension of your songwriting that helps to deliver your story in the way you envisioned it when putting your words down on paper. The goal is to inspire your audience and to mirror the same feeling you have, by igniting those emotions.
